Yep. I was qualified on the Volcano system but never did a live deployment of it. Ironic since in the Navy, I worked on and flew in the SH-60 helo, which was a Volcano platform as well.
I thought the Hemmtt was awesome and my favorite vehicle to drive when in a convoy, but when I had to drive one cross-country, I got seasick due to all of the up and down motion due to being so far out front of the front tires.
Like I said earlier, I was a 12B and 51B until I got injured during Desert Strorm. After that the Army reclassed me to a machinist 44E. I did all of the MWO's as a machinist. But also being a 12B gave me a better understanding of how the systems worked.
We never deployed the Volcano with live mines but used them quite a bit in Germany with trining mines. The training units would deploy live mines at NTC/Ft Irwin while I was stationed there..
I can say the Volcano system was a lot better than the old GEMS system we had when I first got to Germany. The GEMS were know to be jamomatics.
And it's funny that you mentioned the Volcano being mounted to Blackhawks. The first manual I was given only covered using the system from helicopters. So it was a learning curve for me and the operators when installing the system onto ground vehicles.
I was involved in doing the MWO's to turn some fo our AVLB.s into AVLM's along with putting rubber tracks onto generator trailers and mounting the MICLIC to the trailers in the early 90's. I also worked on installing the Volcano system onto ground vehicles. We mostly used the M548 and Hemtt for the Volcano.
Yep. Former active duty Navy, then went to the ARNG as a 31F, then ended up back home as a 12B.
Tasked to a RECON squad and had a blast. Anyone remember the Green 70 form we had to fill out when observing enemy obstacles? I can't find any reference to it but swear we filled them out. Had great fun riding in a 213 to just beyond the range of the big guns, then humped in about 3k to the enemy obstacles. Loved it!
Also used to drive the AVLB and AVLM based on the M60 chassis. My grandpa loved it, since he was a somewhat famous tank commander in WWII...
Yup we sure are. I must have done something right though, I still have all my toes and feet attached and in working order. Ya know someone had to help you CDAT's get through those mine fields 🤣
28 years total as a Combat Engineer, Air Assault, Sapper! 24 years active duty. Did some amazing demolitions missions in Central America, and CONUS. Mansfield Prison experiments with State Highway Patrol, Indiana incinerator implosion and some others that most never get a shot at. Retired in 2010. Loved it, miss it, but time to let the young guns run!!!

And here is a meme that us sappers will appreciate
Here is my coffee cup I use daily 🤣
17 years as a 12B, 99-15.
Yup, I was 12B and 51B before the Army decided to send me to machinist school.
